Pap Tests

Pap tests are a routine health screening for cervical cancer or precancerous cells. Woman over the age of 29 also have HPV testing combined with their Pap smears.

Annual Pap tests should start at age 21, and be done annually until at least age 65. After age 65 women can typically stop Pap screening if they have had three negative Pap tests in a row and two negative HPV tests within 10 years. Women with certain risk factors, including previous precancerous pap test results should generally continue pap screening into their 80s.

Mammograms

State-of-the-art screening mammograms offer breast imaging that is much more comfortable than older mammography technologies. Very low-dose x-rays can detect cancer early – even before a women experience symptoms or feels a lump. And, with early detection, breast cancer is highly treatable with a very high cure rate.

Women ages 45 to 54 should have a mammogram annually, while it is recommended that women 55 and older should continue getting mammograms every one to two years.

DEXA Bone Density

Serious bone loss, medically called osteoporosis, can lead to fractures, falls and even permanent disability. While most women do not experience substantial bone loss, certain women have high risk factors that make a DEXA bone density scan an important part of their regular health screening.

Dr. Fellenbaum can assess your risk – such as heredity, smoking, low body weight, obesity, corticosteroid use, and others – to help you determine at what age a bone density test may be right for you.

In-Office Ultrasound

There are a wide variety of uses for gynecological ultrasounds, including: problems with the pelvic organs, checking for cancerous or non-cancerous growths, investigating abnormal bleeding or pain, checking IUDs, evaluating fertility issues, and more.

By offering ultrasound in our office, our gynecologists can often identify the issue “on the spot” during your examination – rather than having to send you to a 3rd party for a separate ultrasound appointment on a different day.

Immunizations

An important part of remaining healthy includes staying up-to-date on your immunizations. Depending on your age, these may include the following vaccines: Flu shots, Tetanus, HPV, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella (chickenpox), Shingrix (Shingles), Pneumococcal, Meningococcal, Hepatitis, & Covid-19.

Shingrix is recommended by the CDC for adults age 50 and up to prevent shingles & its complications, which can be extremely painful and debilitating. You can get the Shingrix vaccine whether you’ve had shingles or not.
