If you are suffering from pelvic pain, you may have uterine cysts, fibroids or adhesions. These are three very common conditions that are non-cancerous – but can cause extreme pain as well as impact fertility and a woman’s ability to conceive.
Our caring OBGYNs understand how difficult and disruptive these conditions can be. Fortunately, we offer the most advanced diagnostic tools, as well as the latest, state-of-the-art treatments for treating and removing uterine cysts, fibroids or adhesions. Infact, many other doctors in Genesee County send their patients to us for specialized diagnosis and treatment for fibroids, cysts and adhesions.
The first step is always an accurate and precise diagnosis of the cause of your pain. At Flint ObGyn we offer the latest, most advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment right here in our office – so you don’t have to “wait for results” or go to a separate hospital or facility for tests. In many cases these problems can also be treated right in our office using minimally-invasive procedures. And, when surgery is required, Dr. Levashkevich is renowned for his exceptional minimally invasive laprosopic and robot-assisted surgery skills.
UTERINE CYSTS, FIBROID & ADHESIONS
Ovarian Cysts
Some ovarian cysts are a normal result of a woman’s menstrual cycle. However, other types of cysts including dermoid cysts (teratomas), cystadenomas and endometriomas may be caused by certain medical conditions.
Cysts are basically just fluid-filled sacs that develop either inside of the ovary or on the surface of the ovary. Often times ovarian cysts disappear on their own without treatment. However, some ovarian cysts can be quite painful and can create potentially serious health problems.
We offer minimally invasive, state-of-the-art treatments for ovarian cysts at Flint ObGyn. The treatment Dr. Fellenbaum recommends for you will depend upon a number of factors including your age, type and size of the cyst, whether you wish to have more children, and the degree of pain.
Fibroids
Fibroids are a common condition in which a mass (tumor or growth) develops within the muscle wall of the uterus. It is believed that hormones including estrogen and progesterone hormones promote the growth of fibroids. Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) and it is extremely rare – 1 in 10,000 cases or .01% – that they will develop into cancer.
Many fibroids cause no pain or symptoms – and can remain the same size for many years. Other fibroids may suddenly appear and grow quite rapidly – and cause heavy and long periods, intense cramps, pain during intercourse, or even bladder leaks (urinary incontinence).
The type of treatment Dr. Fellenbaum will recommend will depends on the size, location, and rate of growth of the fibroids. Flint ObGyn offers the latest advancements in diagnosis and minimally invasive treatments for uterine fibroids.
Adhesions
Pelvic adhesions are scar tissue bands that can cause internal organs to “stick together”. They can be caused by previous surgery, pelvic infections, or in many cases can result from severe endometriosis. In addition to being quite painful, adhesions can interfere with internal organs and cause serious problems such as bowel blockage or obstruction, IBS or painful sex.
Normal diagnostic procedures such as x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasound can not diagnose adhesions. That is why it is important to see a pelvic pain specialist, like the doctors at Flint ObGyn.
We have the most advanced diagnostic tools to locate and identify adhesions. And we offer state-of-the-art treatments, including innovative, minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, that can often remove the adhesions during the same procedure as the diagnostics.
